/ About

I am a self-taught photographer who has lived and worked in Africa for more than 35 years. I have now resettled in Europe but still travel a lot to Africa for my work.

A special interest in anthropology and ethnography has helped my understanding of cultures different from mine, and allowed me to find similarities that connect humanity. In the past, I mostly worked on picture stories that focused on indigenous peoples and their connection to nature or wildlife; many of these traditions have now disappeared though. My recent work has therefore been more contemplative and narrative-free, and the choice to shoot exclusively in black and white is a deliberate reflection of this state.

My work has appeared in many international publications, including National Geographic Magazine, Geo, the Sunday Times Magazine, Paris-Match, and the Smithsonian.

I am the author of two monographs, Swahili (Editions Contrejour, 2019) and Burnt eyes, soon to be released by Skeleton Key Press.
